BACKGROUND:

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center opened to the public in 1993. It is located on 160 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm and the entrance to Portage Valley. The center is open everyday, year-round.

Animals that are unable to be released or survive in the wild are given refuge in the center’s spacious enclosures, where visitors can observe and photograph some of Alaska’s largest land animals up close.

Animals at AWCC include:  grizzly, brown and black bears, Alaskan moose, plains bison, wood bison, Rocky Mountain elk, Sitka black-tailed deer, caribou, musk oxen, coyotes, foxes, a bald eagle, great-horned owls and a porcupine.  During the spring and summer, visitors may also see baby orphaned animals that AWCC has taken in.

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  Operating funds are obtained through admission fees, gift shop and snack bar sales, grants and cash donations from visitors.
